Magic Moment of the Month - April 2006

Joshua is a 12-year-old boy from Birmingham with the best sense of humor.  He attends the Alabama School for the Deaf & Blind and has many, many friends at school.  Despite his disabilities resulting from Mitochondrial Myopathy, Joshua’s favorite things to do are build with Lego blocks, watch movies, and play jokes on his friends at school!

In February, Joshua received his magic moment, which was a trip with his family to Disney World.  When he arrived at Give Kids The World Village and saw the pool, mini golf and video games, he quickly signed to his parents, “I want to live here forever!”  Joshua’s parents said he rode roller coasters, saw race cars and even threw some balls to the dolphins at the Central Florida theme parks.

Joshua’s favorite character is Stitch from the movie, “Lilo & Stitch,” and much to his surprise, he got to meet Stitch while at Disney World.  According to his dad, when Joshua was born, they nicknamed him Stitch because he was always getting into trouble … just like Stitch.  Because of this, getting to meet Stitch in person was a real treat for the whole family.

Joshua’s condition makes it increasingly difficult to remember things, but the excited look on his face when he signs vivid descriptions of the trip reflects how much he enjoyed his stay at Disney World and Give Kids The World Village.  Of all the things he experienced, Joshua’s favorite was the scary rides.  When he was asked why that was his favorite, he signed “because it made my mom’s hair stand on end.”  What a little joker he is!
