Learning to Smile Again
On May 8, 2006, Trent’s life was changed forever when he was involved in a frightening automobile accident. Many didn’t have hope that Trent would live because of the severe damage done to his brain, but his mom never gave up hope. Today, Trent is 14 years old and has made an amazing recovery. Even his doctors are stunned with the progress he has made.
After the accident, Trent had to relearn almost everything – how to walk, eat and communicate. It has been two years since the accident and one of the only things Trent has trouble with is his ability to speak. Since it is unlikely that this part of his brain will ever fully recover, Trent is learning sign language and one of the first things he learned was to tell his mom “you’re wrong!”… something in every teenage boy’s vocabulary.
Trent’s magic moment was a laptop computer. When his wish volunteer, Ryan Graham, delivered his computer, Trent’s smile was huge. He couldn’t wait to get started downloading music, one of his favorite hobbies. He even discovered a narrating program that would speak what he typed. He has also been able to use his computer to help with his school work.
Trent is an amazing inspiration to all who meet him. Instead of being angry by what the accident took from him, he has learned to appreciate life even more... showing this to everyone by the great big smile that never leaves his face.
